How we score 393 AI tools across 8 objective dimensions and match them to the right person — no black boxes, no hidden agendas.

How we pick the right AI for you

Pickurai uses an objective scoring engine: every tool in our catalog is rated across 8 independent dimensions (1–10 each). When you answer the 6-question form, the engine adjusts the weight of each dimension based on your profile, tech level, budget, and stated priorities — then ranks every eligible tool mathematically.

There is no subjective editorial ranking. The same inputs always produce the same output. Every score and weight is public and reviewed weekly.

8 dimensions scored for every tool

Each of the 393 tools in our catalog is scored 1–10 on: Popularity (market adoption), Free tier quality, Value for money, Ease of use, Raw power, Integrations, Privacy (10 = fully local/self-hosted, 4 = cloud with data usage), and Speed. Scores are reviewed and updated weekly.

Budget is a hard ceiling — no exceptions

We never recommend a tool that costs more than your selected monthly budget. If a tool's lowest paid plan exceeds your ceiling, it is excluded before scoring begins. Tools with a free tier are always eligible.

Your answers shift the dimension weights

Base weights are adjusted by your answers. Selecting "Beginner" doubles the weight of ease of use and halves the weight of raw power. Selecting "Enterprise" doubles the weight of integrations and privacy. Selecting "Developer" doubles the power weight. Your budget tier amplifies the free-tier score if you want free only. Weights compound across all four axes.

Priority deal-breakers apply a dominant multiplier

If you flag a deal-breaker — data privacy, speed, integrations, or offline capability — it applies an 8× or 10× multiplier to the relevant dimension. This makes it the overwhelming factor in the ranking. For example, selecting "Data privacy is critical" multiplies the privacy score by 8, which means tools like Tabnine (on-prem option), n8n (self-hosted), or Stable Diffusion (local) consistently surface above cloud-only alternatives.

Optional context fine-tunes the result

If you fill in the optional free-text field (Q6), we run a lightweight AI pass over the pre-scored candidates. The AI reads your specific use case and reorders the shortlist within the already-filtered, already-scored results. This step is optional — the scoring engine alone produces strong results for most users.

You always get 4 picks, not one

The result shows the top-scoring tool as best match, the 2nd and 3rd highest as alternatives, and the highest-scoring tool marked as indie (smaller or less-known) as the hidden gem pick. In equal-score tiebreakers, tools with an affiliate programme rank slightly above those without — full disclosure is in our transparency section below.

How a tool earns a place in the catalog

We review and update the catalog manually. A tool is included only if it meets all of the following criteria. Tools that no longer qualify are removed.

At least 10,000 active users or verified market traction
Solves a specific, differentiated use case — not just a generic wrapper
Has been operating for at least 3 months publicly
Has a free tier or an accessible trial — no sales call required
Works in English and has a publicly accessible product
Stable enough to recommend — no critical reliability issues reported
Generic ChatGPT wrapper with no real added value
Closed beta with no public access or waitlist-only
Enterprise-only with no direct self-serve signup
Shut down, acquired and discontinued, or unreliable

The 8 dimensions — what each score means

Every tool in the catalog is scored 1–10 on each dimension. Scores reflect objective data (pricing, user base, benchmark tests) cross-checked against community consensus. They are not editorial opinions.

Popularity — base weight ×1.5

Measured by estimated active user base, search interest, and market adoption. Popularity acts as a quality signal: tools used by millions have been stress-tested by real users.

Free tier quality — base weight ×0.5, up to ×8 if budget = free

Rates how genuinely useful the free plan is — can a user solve their real problem without paying? This dimension is heavily amplified when you select "Free only" as your budget.

Ease of use — base weight ×1.5, doubled for beginners

Time-to-first-useful-result for a brand new user with no help. This weight doubles for beginners and drops to ×0.4 for developer-level users.

Power — base weight ×2.0, highest base weight

Capability ceiling: the most complex task the tool can handle at its best. Frontier-class means the model ranks in the top 5% of public AI benchmarks (MMLU, HumanEval, MATH) and can handle multi-step reasoning, long context, and professional-grade output. The frontier shifts as new models launch — scores are reviewed weekly. Power has the highest base weight because we default to recommending capable tools.

How the score is calculated

Every tool's score for a given query is a weighted sum across the 8 dimensions:

score = (popularity × w₁) + (free_tier × w₂) + (value × w₃) + (ease_of_use × w₄)
        + (power × w₅) + (integrations × w₆) + (privacy × w₇) + (speed × w₈)

Each dimension score is 1–10. The effective weight (w) is the base weight multiplied by any profile, tech-level, budget, or priority modifiers that apply to your answers. The match % shown on each result card is the tool's score divided by the theoretical maximum (every dimension at 10), expressed as a percentage — so you can compare all 4 picks on a common scale.

Affiliate links and editorial independence

Some tools in our catalog have affiliate programs. When you click a link and subscribe to a tool, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This is how Pickurai stays free.

Affiliate relationships do not influence the core scoring algorithm. A tool's score is computed entirely from its objective performance across 8 dimensions, weighted by your answers. The only exception is a tie-breaking rule: when two tools are mathematically tied after full scoring, the tool with an affiliate programme ranks slightly higher. This affects fewer than 5% of queries and never overrides a clear, merit-based difference in scores. We disclose it here in full.

Many of the tools we recommend most often — ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, Cursor, GitHub Copilot — have no affiliate programme at all. Their ranking reflects only their scores.

How we keep the catalog current

The AI tools space moves fast. We review and update every tool's scores weekly — pricing changes, new features, and shifts in the competitive landscape all affect the 8 dimensions. New tools that meet our inclusion criteria are added on a rolling basis; discontinued or unreliable tools are removed.

The scoring weights are reviewed whenever a new Q1 category or user profile produces results that feel systematically off. Because every ranking is a mathematical output of scores × weights, adjusting a weight instantly reorders results for all relevant queries — no per-rule editing required.

Why Pickurai only lists real AIs — not wrappers

When we started building Pickurai, we asked ourselves a question that sounds simple but carries a lot of weight: what actually counts as an AI? Short answer: a model that reasons, generates, or processes autonomously. Long answer: exactly that — and not whatever happens to be wrapped around it.

A wrapper is a layer. A nice interface on top of something that already exists. There's nothing inherently wrong with that — most modern software is layers on top of layers — but in the AI space, the term has become dangerously blurred. Tools marketed as "AI for X" turn out to be a form with an OpenAI API call stitched in the back. At Pickurai, we don't want to mislead you. If you're looking for an AI to help you write emails, you deserve to know whether you're using GPT-4o with a system prompt on top, or whether there's something genuinely different under the hood.

Our criterion is straightforward: we list AIs that contribute something at the model or architecture level, not distribution products with a private label slapped over someone else's infrastructure.

We ask one simple question: if you removed the interface, would anything be left? If the answer is "a model with its own capabilities, specific training data, a differential architecture, or non-trivial reasoning layer" — it's in. If the answer is "an Anthropic API call with a system prompt and nice CSS" — it's not. That doesn't mean wrapper products are bad. Some of them are genuinely useful. But Pickurai isn't a directory of software products that use AI. It's a curated selection of AIs themselves.

There's a counter-argument that gets raised often: "Well, Netflix is just a wrapper of AWS." Technically true. But the meme is funny precisely because it operates at a level of abstraction that's completely useless. Netflix isn't valuable because it owns its own servers — it's valuable because it has original content, proprietary video compression, a recommendation engine, and a user experience that competitors have spent years trying to replicate. The layer it builds on top of AWS matters. It's not cosmetic. The same logic applies here: we're not anti-wrapper on principle, we're pro-signal. And the signal we care about is whether there's real AI under the hood.

Knowing what's underneath also changes everything for your real-world choices. A wrapper product charges a margin on top of the underlying model's API cost — if you know which model it uses, you can often access it more cheaply or directly. And a wrapper is fundamentally limited by the model beneath it: no amount of prompt engineering raises a GPT-3.5 layer to GPT-4o performance. You can't meaningfully compare "AI tool A vs AI tool B" if both are secretly calling the same underlying model. You're comparing UX, not intelligence. That distinction is, precisely, what gives Pickurai its meaning.
