Ernie, known in China as Wenxin Yiyan, is Baidu's AI and was the first major Chinese answer to ChatGPT (March 2023). Its flagship ERNIE 5.1 is an efficient mixture-of-experts model that reached the global top five on independent leaderboards, served via Baidu's Qianfan cloud and woven into Baidu Search and enterprise products. The consumer chatbot is free and the API is cheap. ERNIE 4.5 is open-weight, but the newer 5.x flagships are hosted-only. As a Chinese cloud service, the usual data-jurisdiction and content caveats apply.
