A friend asked me last week which AI he should use to clean up a podcast episode. Not the cinematic kind — just a 40-minute conversation he records on his phone and posts on Spotify. He'd already spent an afternoon trying to figure it out. He hadn't started editing yet. He had started reading.

The math is brutal. If a directory lists 12,000 tools and you spend 30 seconds glancing at each one, you'd need 100 hours to see them all. Nobody does that. What you actually do is scroll the first two pages, click three things, and pick whichever one looks the least suspicious. You sell featured slots. You add filters that don't filter. You optimise for SEO around long-tail "best AI for X" searches, and the traffic flows in. The hard part — building a picker that takes a real situation and returns a real answer — has barely started.
A directory tells you what exists. A picker tells you what to do. Most people don't need an encyclopedia of AI tools. They need someone to point at one and say "use this, for your situation, this week."
The Hidden Cost of Endless Choice
Decision paralysis is real, and it has a price. When my friend spent an afternoon reading about podcast-cleanup tools instead of recording his next episode, that was the cost. Not the subscription he didn't buy. The episode he didn't make.

When Directories Still Make Sense
I want to be fair here. There are moments when a directory is the right tool. If you're a journalist mapping the state of an industry, you want the long list. If you're an investor scanning for indie launches, you want the firehose. If you're an AI nerd (this includes me, on weekends) and you genuinely enjoy reading product pages, the big directories are a perfectly good rabbit hole.
But none of those use cases describe the person who just wants to clean up a podcast episode. Or the marketer trying to write better LinkedIn captions before Friday. Or the student writing a thesis who needs to summarise twelve PDFs by Sunday. Those people don't need an industry map. They need a single, confident answer — and the cost of giving it to them wrong is much lower than the cost of giving them ten thousand options and letting them sort it out.
The AI tool space is mature enough now that we can stop pretending discovery is the same as selection. We've spent the last two years building bigger and bigger maps. The next two will be about building better directions.
The Time Calculation
